The Electric Division is responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of all electric services for the Department. This Division also manages meter reading and maintenance functions for all electric and gas meters. Holyoke Gas & Electric serves approximately 18,000 electric customers and experiences a summer peak load of approximately 80 MW. HG&E serves its electric load through a combination of its own generation assets and the purchase of electricity from other providers. HG&E’s primary generation assets include the Hadley Falls Hydroelectric Generators, which produce 33MW at the Hadley Falls Dam on the Connecticut River. HG&E produces another 15 MW of power from smaller hydro units located throughout the Holyoke Canal System. HG&E holds a 40 year Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license to own and operate the Dam and related assets. That license expires in 2038.
