Start Service

Activate an Existing Electric or Existing Natural Gas Service

If your new location previously received electric or natural gas service from HG&E and already has a meter, visit our Main Office during normal business hours.

We can set up a new account in your name and will immediately work to have your electric and/or gas services turned on as quickly as possible. New residential customers will need to supply two valid forms of identification, including a government issued form of photo identification such as a Driver’s License, and a lease agreement if renting. You also will be required to sign an application form.  A deposit is required for residential customers who are non-homeowners. A $125 deposit is required to begin service for a single service. A $300 deposit is required to begin service for gas and electric service. All deposits must be paid by cash or money order. Deposits may also be required for homeowners based on available credit information.  A credit reference from customers' previous utility may be used in place of a deposit; must be received prior to new service.

Commercial customers must provide the following:

  • Completed commercial application
  • Payment for any previous account balances
  • Lease agreement if you do not own the property
  • One of the following documents:
    • For accounts where the application is signed by the individual whose name appears on the deed, the applicant must provide a copy of the deed
    • For accounts where the application is a Doing Business As (DBA), the applicant must provide a Business Certificate or Certificate of Occupancy
    • For accounts where the application is a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) or Incorporated (Inc), the applicant must provide a Certificate of Organization

Please note: new commercial class customer accounts are required to sign up for our automatic payment program or to pay a service deposit.

Contact us if you have any questions.

Install a New Electric Service

If you are constructing a new home or facility or require a change in your existing electric service for a new addition, please fill out HG&E’s New Service Installation Form below and have it completed by your electrician so that we may install the proper wiring and meter at your location.  This form also applies to temporary service installations.  Please take into account that HG&E requires at least a week for simple services and up to a month for more complex projects to plan, design, provide materials, and perform the necessary construction.  Once this form is submitted, your electrical contractor must contact our Electric Distribution Department at (413) 536-9355 in order to outline customer work requirements and conditions necessary to supply electrical service.  Once the proper electrical connection has been made to your structure, you can visit our Main Office to set-up a new account.

If you have any questions about the new electric service installation process, please contact us.

Install a New Natural Gas Service

Thank you for choosing to heat your home or business with clean-burning natural gas! Provided that there is a gas main outside your home, installation is just a phone call away. New natural gas service customers receive the following:
