“Serviceman Chris Barney displayed professionalism and thorough workmanship when repairing my dryer, I am very pleased with the quality of service provided,” said a longtime HG&E customer in late summer 2013. “My dryer works like new.”
Frequently, customer calls like this come into HG&E's Service Department for Christopher 'Chris' Barney. If a customer is not calling to praise Chris, they may be calling to request service from him, because he has developed a reputation throughout the community as HG&E's expert in appliance repair.
Chris has been a proud member of HG&E's service team since May 2005. In an interview, Chris said, “I am really proud to represent Holyoke Gas & Electric on the front line and in customers' homes. My goal is to leave the customer satisfied and try to teach them something about their appliances.”
Chris grew up in Holyoke, graduated from Holyoke High School and began his career in sales at The Carpet Factory Outlet in Holyoke. His start in sales provided him the training and skill set which would make him a popular serviceman. “I learned how to listen and understand customer needs and concerns,” he said.
After many years working in sales, Chris attended Porter & Chester Institute where he studied heating and air conditioning. For ten years prior to joining HG&E, he worked at Sears in appliance repair and some customers may remember his smiling face from his years working there.
As technology progresses, Chris understands the importance of keeping up with training and skills. “One day I could be working on an old steam boiler and the next I am working on a brand new condensing boiler; every day is different and challenging.” At Sears and HG&E, he has taken advantage of on-the-job training, professional development, and learning from his team. He is grateful to many team members who helped him as a new employee in 2005, namely, Tom Sears, John Wieland, and J.R. Rodriguez.
“I love working with the people of Holyoke,“ Chris said. “Our customers really appreciate HG&E, and we really appreciate our customers.”
When he is not fixing things for HG&E customers, he may be fixing things at home. In his spare time, Chris enjoys carpentry. He also enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and two dogs; a german shepherd and chocolate lab.
