Welcome to your new home! HG&E will work with you to make the process of setting up or upgrading utility services quick and easy. See details below that will help you start, stop, move, or upgrade your service.
Residential Start, Stop, Move, Upgrade
START SERVICE
NOTE: HG&E imposed a natural gas moratorium in 2019. Before proceeding, please review the terms of the moratorium to determine if gas is available at your location.
If your new location previously received electric or natural gas service from HG&E and already has a meter, sign up online or visit the Main Office during normal business hours.
We can set up an account in your name and will have your electric and/or gas services turned on as quickly as possible.
New residential customers will need to supply the following:
- Application for Service
- Two valid forms of identification, including a government issued form of photo identification (Driver’s License, MA ID Card)
- A lease agreement if renting
- A deposit ranging from $0 to $300 may be required prior to service starting. Deposits are based on available credit information, which can include a soft credit check. The deposit amount will be determined when signing up for service.
Contact us if you have any questions.

If you are constructing a new home or require a change in your existing electric service for a new addition, please have your electrical contractor complete HG&E’s Request for Electric Service so HG&E can install the proper wiring and meter at your location. This form also applies to temporary service installations.
Timeline: Please take into account that HG&E requires at least a week for simple services and up to a month for more complex projects to plan, design, provide materials, and perform the necessary construction.
Once this form is submitted, your electrical contractor must contact our Electric Distribution Department at (413) 536-9355 in order to outline customer work requirements and conditions necessary to supply electrical service. Once the proper electrical connection has been made to your structure, you can complete the application for service.
If you have any questions about the new electric service installation process, please contact us.
As of January 2019, HG&E is unable to accommodate new natural gas service requests due to the lack of natural gas availability in the region. Customers can make improvements to their existing gas service (i.e. replace a gas furnace, gas stove, or gas hot water heater), so long as the load profile does not increase and the service was active as of December 31, 2018. If you are interested in a new or upgraded service, please fill out the natural gas interest form.
For more information, please review HG&E Natural Gas Moratorium information.
If you need a new space-heating system for your building and can’t install a gas heating system due to the moratorium, air source heat pumps/mini-splits can be the next most cost-effective option. Visit Smart Energy for more information on this heating system type. Rebates are available for qualifying air source heat pumps, electric clothes dryers and electric heat pump water heaters.
Stop Service
Stopping your service is as easy as filling out the service termination form or calling customer service (413) 536-9300. We require 24 hours’ notice to terminate service. Please note that only the customer of record can terminate service. We will verify your personal information prior to terminating any account.
Customers are responsible for all power furnished until we have been notified to terminate service and we have been provided access to the meters.
Move Service
If you will be moving from one residential location to a new location within our service territory, please fill out the residential transfer service form or visit our Main Office during normal business hours.
We can set up a new account in your name and will have your electric and/or gas services turned on as quickly as possible.
Customers will need to supply:
- Two valid forms of identification, including a government issued form of photo identification such as a Driver’s License.
- Completed application for service.
- Please Note: A deposit may be required based on available credit information.
Upgrade Service
If you would like to upgrade your electric service, please have your electrician complete the Request for Electric Service form.
Due to the lack of natural gas capacity in the region, HG&E will not be able to accommodate new or upgraded natural gas service requests as of January 2019. Customers can make improvements to their existing gas service (i.e. replace a gas furnace, gas stove, or gas hot water heater), so long as the load profile for their home does not increase and the service was actively consuming gas in December 2018. If you are interested in a new or upgraded service, please fill out the natural gas interest form.
